Food Festivals are an all year-round commitment…
Somerset’s Food Festival scene is growing – each year more and more events crop up – find one near you!
31st March 2017 | Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market
On the last Friday of every month, the local producers of North Somerset make the trip out to the seaside haven of Burnham-on-Sea to sell their wares and win over new customers. With a distinctly Victorian vibe, this is a great place to pick up some harder to find cheeses and fantastic gourmet meats and breads. When you’re this close to the sea, you can always expect to see some truly fresh fish on offer too.
27th May 2017 | Burnham-on-Sea Spring Food & Drink Festival
Celebrated as an example of ‘Food Festivals done right’, the town of Burnham-on-Sea played host to over 16,000 visitors at last year’s annual event. This will be the 9th incarnation of the popular Festival, with the usual culprits of the very best in Somerset Ciders and Cheese on offer. The festival has grown to be a favourite for bikers, so expect to see a fair amount of leather clad foodies around and there’s also free demos from chefs, workshops and kids activities.
31st May 2017 | Royal Bath and West Show
One of the biggest cultural events in the Somerset calendar, 600 trade stands come to the show each year making variety the name of the game. There’s the usual schedule of livestock shows, gun dogs on parade and craft demonstrations. This year’s a big one for cheese lovers as The British Cheese Awards will be held during the show. Last year’s Awards had over 900 entries in 18 categories, so expect an even bigger turnout this year, with even more cheese to try!
1st July 2017 | Scandinavian Midsummer Feast
Less of a festival and more of an al fresco dining experience, this celebration of all things ‘foodie, summery and Scandinavian’ is the brain child of TV producer Chloe Avery (who has worked on TV such as The Great British Bakeoff and Comic Relief). Expect in-depth demos from renowned guests like Trine Hahnemann, as well as authentic music and dancing. The event is ticketed and will sell out: so book your tickets well ahead of schedule!
7th July 2017 | Frome Food Feast
This week-long food festival is an absolute must for anyone wanting to truly gorge themselves on the produce that Somerset has to offer. Pitched at the start of Summer, a musical procession through the town heralds the beginning of the festival that features comedy, drama and arts alongside the generous selection of food and drink on offer. Visit for a day or two to truly appreciate what the Feast has to offer.
27th July 2017 | Forde Abbey Charity Summer Fair
On the very edge of the Blackdown Hills, Forde Abbey makes for a quaint day-out at the best of times. Once a year, however, the sizeable grounds are packed out with all kinds of country sports enthusiasts showing off their skills; every conceivable pastime, from falconry on horseback to ferret racing and dog agility shows. There are numerous food and drink stalls, as well as the opportunity to learn fly-fishing and all the proceeds of the day go to charity – last year’s Fair raised a huge £28,000.
15th September 2017 | Bath Chilli Festival
Although I try and steer clear of University campuses during term-times, this little event is an absolute must for any lover of spice or heat. Collecting together the country’s finest chilli retailers, experts and passionate enthusiasts – this two-day event has it all. There are American style eating challenges, as well as more obscure oddities, such as the ‘Longest Chilli Competition’. Those looking to stock up on sauces will be well catered to with over 35 traders selling a huge variety of chilli related food products.
